There’s a lot to be said for making the space that you eat in as alluring as possible. Honouring the sacramental nature of everyday eating by providing an attractive place in which to do it in is, to my mind, of paramount importance. And I’m a firm believer that a meal is vastly improved upon when enjoyed in an agreeable environment. One of the best meals I ever had was perfectly ripe, sliced tomatoes on fresh bread on a beach in Crete many years ago. I’ll never forget how wonderful it tasted and I suspect the setting had quite a lot to do with how I felt (and still feel) about that sandwich.
You don’t have to have loads of money or space to make a special place to eat or feed your friends in. An area set aside in the living room, preferably near a window, or in the kitchen itself can work just as well, if not better than a separate dining room. I’m not a huge fan of formal dining rooms to be honest – I loathe formality – and prefer to eat as close to the kitchen (if not in it) as possible. And when it comes to furniture, I like to keep it very simple and a little eclectic. I like good lighting (love a beautiful pendant light over a table), mismatched chairs (each with their own story), a roomy table that can take a few knocks and bookshelves. Lots and lots of bookshelves.

Unpretentious and easily achievable, this is the kind of table that lends itself to endless cups of tea and salacious chats with your mates. Love!

Such a simple and serene place to enjoy a meal. See how a bit of wood really warms things up a little?

It's not quite my style, but there's something shabby chic-ish about this dining area that appeals to me. My mother would LOVE this.

Love the details in this all-white set-up, especially the chipped enamel light shades. Amazing natural light as well, I imagine.

I'll be tucking this into my inspiration folder. This is a space I'd love to entertain my friends and family in. Informal, understated glam. What's not to love?
Later, Julia
